In this initiative, the KST was a sub-grantee to the Ministry of Agriculture. Rural schools were used as effective hubs for agricultural technology dissemination. Accordingly, pupils were identified to be the logical carriers of the improved technologies and entry points to reaching sweet potato farming communities that had no access to improved seeds.
About 23,245 pupils were involved and each received vines of improved varieties (Biofortified Vitamin A Sweet potato) for their parents or guardians. Parents multiplied the vines and paid double the quantity received by passing them to two neighbors. As a result, 146,000 farm families received at least 29.1 million vines in a very short period.
The success stories and lessons were documented as Fast Track Success and Lessons, and a scientific paper was also published in high impact journal in European Review of Agricultural Economics Published paper.
