The Mtoto Mwerevu Project was implemented from October 2017 to October 2020. The project was implemented in five (5) Wards namely Ruhunga, Kishogo, Izimbya, Rubale and Katoro which are located in Bukoba Rural. The Programme was funded by IMA World Health and supervised by PANITA (Partnership for Nutrition in Tanzania).
IMA WORLD HEALTH also known as Interchurch Medical Assistance is an international, nonprofit health care service organization, from Washington, D.C United States appointed the KST to work in collaboration with the Partnership for Nutrition in Tanzania (PANITA) to implement this project. The project addressed multi-sectoral social and behavioral change (SBC) interventions aimed at preventing and reducingstunting among under five children.
The project aimed at reducing stunting among children less than 5 years of age by atleast 7percentage point and low birth weight by at least 3 percentage point. This was done by conducting training for transforming and sustaining behaviours, building capacity and investing in maternal, infant and young child feeding, early childhood development, hygiene and sanitation, promoting homestead food production and addressing gender imbalance.
A total of 23 Support Groups was formed from those five Wards in Bukoba Rural covering each village per Ward. The groups comprised of pregnant mothers, breast feeding women, care givers as well as fathers.
ACTIVITIES THAT WAS IMPLEMENTED:
Different activities were done during the project cycle including:-
1. Conducting Stakeholders meeting at Ward Level
2. Identification and Formation of Support Groups
3. Conducting Capacity building of the support groups based on six behavior strategies of MTOTO MWEREVU project;
 Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCAN),
 Hand washing - WASH(After toilet, before cooking and before feeding a baby)
 Early Childhood Development –ECD
 hygiene and sanitation
 Promotion of Homestead food production
 Addressing gender imbalance.
4. Using of pre-recorded audio in delivering messages of Mtoto Mwerevu
5. Promotion of Kitchen garden Establishment
6. Conducting mentoring to the Existing 13 Support groups
7. Ensuring the completeness and quality of data including verifying data collected from the Support group
THE PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS
• The programme reached the targeted beneficiaries with a Total of 822 (138 males, 684 females) from all Villages of the five Wards: Kishogo, Rubale, Izimbya, Ruhunga and Katoro.
• There was a common understanding on the objective and the implementation of the project among the project key staff, volunteers and local leaders.
• The local leaders and other stakeholders participated fully and were informed on the project objective which was transforming and sustaining behaviours, building capacity and investing in maternal, infant and young child feeding, early childhood development, hygiene and sanitation, promoting Homestead food production and addressing gender imbalance.
• There was different monitoring visits to 23 Support Groups from five Wards in Bukoba Rural and they received refresher trainings from the six behaviors of Change.
• There is a noticeable enthusiasm and support from the local leaders as well as among members of support group.
• There was a decrease of malnutrition in the project areas and there was a change on the food behaviours mentality.
